Project Brief
The Future Graveyard is a speculative design project imagining what a cemetery becomes when artificial intelligence replaces the headstone. Set in 2040, when population growth and land scarcity have made traditional burial untenable, the project proposes a system in which a wearable recorder gathers data across a person's lifetime; after death, that data is processed through machine learning into a virtual copy of their consciousness. The design comprises two parts — the recorder, a wearable device, and the carrier, a public installation housing the AI consciousness, where visitors can continue a conversation with the people they have lost. The work asks whether technology can extend a person's value beyond death, and whether doing so lessens our fear of it or deepens it.
